How to Get In

How to Get a Reservation at Lei NYC (2026 Guide)

Key takeaways

  1. 1.Lei releases a limited number of reservations on Resy 14 days ahead at 9 AM ET. Be ready at 8:58 and book the moment the date appears.
  2. 2.Lei holds a large share of its 28 seats for walk-ins. Line up by about 4:15 PM for the 5 PM opening, or try after 10 PM.
  3. 3.Cancellations come back often. More than half the Lei dates Quenelle members have watched saw a table reappear, usually about four days out.
  4. 4.Groups of five or more can't book on Resy. Use the contact form on Lei's website instead.

Lei was already a hard table before June. Then it won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant, and a 28-seat wine bar on a crooked Chinatown street became one of the most talked-about rooms in the country. Getting Lei reservations now means beating everyone who read the same headline.

The good news is that Lei is more gettable than its reputation. Its reservation drop is small, but it's predictable. The walk-in policy is real, not a polite fiction. And cancellations come back here more often than at most restaurants this hyped. Here's how the system works and how I'd play it.

Lei Reservations: How the Booking System Works

Lei books through Resy, and through the reservation link on its own website, which goes to the same inventory. The rules:

  • 14 days ahead, at 9 AM ET. Lei's website says it releases a limited number of reservations 14 days in advance at 9 AM. Our own older records showed a longer window, but the restaurant's current wording is clear, so plan around two weeks.
  • A limited number. Lei deliberately keeps much of the room off Resy. The reservations that do go up are a minority of the night's seats.
  • Walk-ins welcome nightly. The restaurant says so on its site and its Instagram, and Resy's own guide to the room says most of it is saved for walk-ins.
  • Groups of five or more use the contact form on Lei's website rather than Resy.
  • Hours: 5 PM to midnight. Time Out lists Wednesday to Sunday, but Lei's Instagram says every day. As of October 2026 I'd confirm on Resy before planning a Monday or Tuesday.

The address is 15–17 Doyers Street, the short, bent block off Pell Street and the Bowery.

How to Get a Table at Lei, Ordered by Reliability

1. Walk in at 5 PM (or after 10 PM)

The most reliable way into Lei doesn't involve Resy at all. Because so much of the room is held back, a walk-in at opening has a real chance of being seated immediately, even on nights that look sold out online.

Resy's guide suggests arriving as early as 4:15 PM for the 5 PM opening. On a Friday or Saturday, I'd take that literally. On a weeknight you can probably cut that a little, but don't arrive after 5. If you can't make it at opening, the other window is late: after about 10 PM, when early tables have finished and the kitchen is still going until midnight.

What doesn't work well is showing up at 7:30 PM on a Saturday. Aggregator reports suggest waits of 30 to 60 minutes at peak, and since the James Beard win I'd expect worse. Walk in as a pair if you can. Two seats come free far more often than four.

2. Catch a cancellation inside the two-week window

This is where Lei surprises people. Of the Lei dates Quenelle members have watched, more than half saw a bookable table come back. When tables reappeared, it was typically about four days before the date, which fits a room where people book two weeks ahead and then their plans change.

That's a real path, but those tables don't sit there long. Resy's "Notify" feature emails everyone on the list at once, so the fastest person wins. A Quenelle watch checks Lei's Resy inventory around the clock and texts you the moment a table for your party size appears. It isn't a guarantee, but at Lei the odds are better than at most rooms this popular.

3. Book at 9 AM, exactly 14 days out

If you have a fixed date, count back 14 days and be on Resy at 8:58 AM ET with your party size set and your card saved. Tap the date the second it loads. With only a limited number of tables going up, weekend slots can disappear within minutes.

Two things help. Be flexible on time: a 5:30 or 9:45 PM table is far easier than 8 PM. And book for two. The room is small and a four-top is rare.

4. Large groups: use the contact form, early

For five or more, Resy won't help. Use the contact form on Lei's website as far ahead as you can, and give a few dates. With 28 seats, a big table takes a real share of the room, so don't count on a weekend. If the occasion is fixed, book it somewhere bigger and come to Lei as two pairs another night.

What Lei Actually Is

Lei opened in June 2025. It's the first solo project from Annie Shi, who also co-owns King in SoHo and Jupiter at Rockefeller Center. It's a wine bar first. The list, which Shi runs with wine director Matt Turner, leans French, from Burgundy and Champagne, with German and Basque whites and a low-intervention Chinese Cabernet. Plenty of bottles sit in the $60 to $80 range, which is fair for a list this good.

The food is a short menu from chef Patty Lee, formerly of Mission Chinese Food. It draws on Shi's Shanghainese and Dalian family cooking and Lee's Taiwanese American background. The dish people come for is the sweet and sour beef short rib, a version of a Shanghainese classic made with beef instead of pork and less sugar, so it works with wine. The hand-rolled cat's ear noodles with cumin- and tomato-braised lamb are the other must-order. Get a shao bing to mop up the sauce.

The room is small and candlelit. The Michelin Guide puts it on its list of romantic New York restaurants, and it's a date spot first and a dinner-with-friends spot second.

Is Lei Worth It?

For a date and a good bottle, yes. Time Out's review after the James Beard win said it lives up to the hype, and I agree. The short rib alone justifies a visit.

The fair criticism is about scale. The Infatuation rates it 7.7 and says Lei isn't the best choice if you want a full, multi-course dinner. The menu is short, and a hungry table can work through it fast. Go expecting a great wine bar with excellent food, not a tasting menu, and you'll leave happy.

When to Skip Lei and Book Somewhere Else

If you need a fixed table for a group, or you're not willing to queue at 4:15 PM, plan something else and keep a watch running on Lei. Good alternatives:

  • King, Annie Shi's other restaurant in SoHo, has a Mediterranean menu and a serious wine list, and takes reservations.
  • Cervo's, a short walk away at 43 Canal Street, has Spanish and Portuguese seafood and natural wine. It's also hard to book, but with similar walk-in options. See our Cervo's guide.
  • The Ten Bells, on Broome Street, is a long-running natural wine bar that's easy to walk into, for when you want the wine-bar evening without the queue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lei: What I'd Do to Get a Table Tonight

If I wanted Lei tonight, I'd skip Resy and be on Doyers Street by 4:30 PM with one other person, ready to order a bottle. If that wasn't possible, I'd plan to arrive after 10 PM instead.

For a specific night in the next two weeks, I'd set a Quenelle watch on that date right now and set an alarm for 8:58 AM on the day it releases. More than half the dates our members watch see a table come back, usually a few days out. Between the 9 AM drop, the watch and the walk-in line, I'd expect to get in. If I had a group of five or more, I'd send the contact form today and book King as the backup.
