How to Get a Reservation at Keens Steakhouse NYC (2026 Guide)

Key takeaways
- 1.Keens books on Resy (or by phone at 212-947-3636), with an unusually long window, reported at about 119 days. Keens doesn't publish a release time, so if you want a specific Friday or Saturday, book months ahead.
- 2.The bar is first come, first served and serves the pub menu. Arriving solo or as a pair on a weeknight is the most reliable no-reservation move in this guide.
- 3.Cancellations come back often. Of the Keens dates our members have watched, more than 4 in 5 saw a table reappear, typically about two weeks before the date.
- 4.Keens is open every day except Christmas, with lunch on weekdays from 11:45 AM. Weekday lunch is the easiest table in the building.
Most people assume Keens Steakhouse reservations are as hard to get as the big names downtown. They usually aren't. Keens is the 1885 chophouse on West 36th Street with tens of thousands of clay churchwarden pipes on the ceiling, a 26-ounce mutton chop, and a dining room that feels the way people imagine old New York felt. It's famous, it's busy, and on a Saturday at 8 PM it's full. But it isn't a reservation race.
The real problem with Keens is timing. Its Resy window runs months, not days, so the prime weekend tables go to people who planned early. If you didn't, there are two good ways in: the walk-in bar, and cancellations, which come back here more often than at almost any restaurant we track.
Keens Steakhouse Reservations: How the Booking System Works
Prime-time tables do show up here.
We have logged 7 PM-area releases — but they are the first to go. Be ready the second the drop lands.
Keens takes reservations on Resy and by phone at 212-947-3636. The phone line still works, which is rare in this city, and it's the right call for large parties or the private rooms.
The details that matter:
- The window is long. Several reservation trackers report that Keens opens tables about 119 days ahead, roughly four months, and that lines up with the window in our own records. Keens doesn't publish this or a release time, and one tracker suggests midnight Eastern without calling it a fixed policy. Treat the exact hour as unconfirmed. With a window this long, the hour rarely matters anyway.
- No deposit for standard tables. As of October 2026, reporting on the Resy listing describes no card or prepayment for a regular table, with a request to cancel at least 24 hours ahead. Read the terms on your confirmation screen in case that changes.
- Hours. Monday to Friday, 11:45 AM to 10:30 PM. Saturday, 5 to 10:30 PM. Sunday, 5 to 9:30 PM. Keens is open every day of the year except Christmas.
- Private rooms. There are four upstairs rooms, the Lambs, Lincoln, Bull Moose, and Lillie Langtry rooms, for parties from about 20 to 80. These go through the restaurant's events team, not Resy.
How to Get a Table at Keens, Ordered by Reliability
1. Book early on Resy (the front door)
If you know the date, book it now. The long window means most Keens tables are bookable well ahead. The ones that sell out first are Friday and Saturday between 7 and 8:30 PM, plus December, when office holiday dinners fill the room and the private floors.
Weeknights two or three weeks out often still show a decent spread of times. If your date shows nothing, move to step two rather than giving up.
2. Catch a cancellation (the best backup, and it works here)
This is where Keens differs from the impossible tables. People book Keens months ahead, and over four months plans change: the client dinner moves, the birthday party gets smaller, the trip gets cancelled. Those tables go back into Resy.
Quenelle's monitors show how often. Of the 56 Keens dates our members have watched, 47 saw a bookable table come back. That's more than 4 in 5, one of the best hit rates of any restaurant we track. The sample is modest, so don't treat it as a promise. When tables reappear, it's usually about two weeks before the date, which is roughly when people get serious about their plans and cancel what they won't use.
A Quenelle watch is built for exactly this. Give us the date, party size, and time range, and we'll text you when a real table opens, with a link straight to it. Resy's own Notify works too, but it alerts a list of people at once, and a single 8 PM table for two on a Saturday doesn't stay open long.
3. Walk in at the bar
The bar at Keens is first come, first served, and it serves the pub menu. For one or two people, this is the most dependable no-reservation option in this guide.
Your odds depend on when you show up:
- Weekday lunch, from 11:45 AM: the easiest seat in the building.
- Weeknights before 6 PM: usually workable, especially Monday through Wednesday.
- Friday or Saturday after 7 PM: expect to stand and wait, possibly for a while.
Sources differ on how the Pub Room handles walk-ins. Some describe it as bookable like the dining room, while others say it seats walk-ins too. If you want a Pub Room table rather than a bar seat, call that afternoon and ask what they can do.
4. Book lunch instead of dinner
Weekday lunch at Keens is underrated. It's the same room and the same pipes, the mutton chop is on the lunch menu, and lunch tables are far easier to get than prime-time dinner. If you're visiting and your schedule is flexible, a 1 PM Tuesday lunch is the closest thing Keens has to a sure thing.
5. Call the restaurant
Because Keens still answers the phone, a call on the day can turn up a no-show or a shrinking party that hasn't hit Resy yet. Keep it short and give a range of times. Don't expect them to hold anything.
What Keens Actually Is
Keens opened in 1885 as an offshoot of the Lambs Club, the theater society, in what was then Herald Square's theater district. Actors from the nearby Garrick Theatre famously ducked in during intermissions. The pipes on the ceiling come from the Pipe Club, whose members, reportedly including Teddy Roosevelt, J.P. Morgan, and Albert Einstein, kept their own churchwarden pipes on file.
The modern Keens dates from the late 1970s, when restaurateur George Schwarz bought and restored it. It won a James Beard America's Classics award in 2013. In November 2024, Landry's CEO Tilman Fertitta bought the building for about $30 million. General manager Bonnie Jenkins said the estate chose a buyer who would let the existing team keep running Keens, and so far that's what has happened.
The menu is classic chophouse. The mutton chop, which is lamb these days, is the reason most people come. It's a thick 26-ounce chop with a hard sear, served with mint jelly, and Keens' own menu lists it at $73. The dry-aged prime rib and the porterhouse for two are the other big orders. On the pub menu, a burger runs about $27.50. Budget well over $100 a person for dinner with a drink. The Scotch list is famously long.
There's no strict published dress code that I could find. Most of the room is in business casual, and a jacket never looks out of place.
Is Keens Steakhouse Worth It?
Yes, with the right expectations. Keens isn't the most precise steak in New York. COTE is more exciting, and 4 Charles is more of a production. What Keens has is the room, the history, and a mutton chop you can't really get anywhere else. Some diners find the chop uneven, and the dining room is snug, with tables close together.
For an out-of-town guest, a client dinner, or anyone who wants to see what a 140-year-old New York restaurant feels like, I'd put it near the top of the list. It also helps that Keens doesn't put you through a booking ordeal to get in.
When to Skip Keens and Book Somewhere Else
If you need a steak dinner on a specific Saturday and Keens is full, don't burn the night on the bar line. Book a confirmed table elsewhere and keep a Keens watch running.
- Gallagher's, on West 52nd Street, has been a Theater District steakhouse since 1927, with its meat locker in the front window. It's the closest match to Keens' old New York feel.
- 4 Charles Prime Rib, in the West Village, is the move if prime rib is the point, though it's a much harder table.
- COTE Flatiron, the Michelin-starred Korean steakhouse, is for a more modern dinner. The Butcher's Feast is the order.
The Black Label Burger alone justifies the trip. One of the great rooms in the city.
Danny Meyer's flagship for a reason. Thirty years of consistent excellence.
Classic American food, legendary murals, old New York atmosphere.
Rustic Italian that punches as hard as anywhere in the city.
The lasagna for two is a NYC classic at this point.
Tuscan cooking that feels genuinely transportive. Expect 90-minute waits on busy nights.
Outstanding natural wine program paired with pasta that rivals the neighborhood’s best.
Frequently Asked Questions
Keens Steakhouse: What I'd Do to Get a Table Tonight
If I wanted Keens tonight, I'd check Resy first, since a weeknight table is often still there. If it was full, I'd walk over to 72 West 36th Street before 6 PM and take a seat at the bar, order the mutton chop, and not worry about the dining room.
If I had a specific weekend night in mind, I'd book it on Resy the moment I knew the date, months ahead if possible. If it were already gone, I'd set a Quenelle watch for the party size I actually have and keep an eye out about two weeks before, when Keens cancellations tend to come back. And I'd book lunch as a backup, because the mutton chop is just as good at 1 PM.
